History

There was no League or FA Cup competitions between 1916 and 1919 due to the War.

Arsenal were promoted to the Top Division, despite finishing 5th in the second level, after some backroom manipulation. They began a record breaking run in the Top Division.

The Top Division contained 22 clubs for the first time. The number of clubs would not change until 1988.

Aston Villa won the FA Cup for a record 6th time. Huddersfield Town were the sixth second level club to play in the final. The FA Cup final was played at Stamford Bridge (West London) between 1920 and 1922. Extra Time was played in a final for the first time.
