History

The League second level gains the new (and very confusing) name of The Championship. The third level is renamed as League 1 and the fourth level is renamed as League 2.

Chelsea win their second League Championship exactly 50 seasons after their first. Their points total of 95 sets a new record, beating the previous high of 92 set by Manchester United in 1994. The record was broken with a 3 - 1 win at Manchester United with a game left to play. Their 15 goals conceaded was one less than the record set by Liverpool in 1979. Chelsea also won the League Cup.

Arsenal set a new record by going 49 consecutive league matches unbeaten. The run consisted of the last 2 matches of the 2003 season plus the entire 38 matches of the 2004 season and the first 9 matches of the 2005 season. The previous longest run of 42 matches set by Nottingham Forest ended in season 1979.

London clubs occupy the top two positions for the second consecutive season. This is the sixth occasion where the top two clubs are from the same city.

Southampton are relegated after 27 years in the Top Division. On the final day of the season the bottom four clubs were separated by only 2 points with West Bromwich Albion occupying last place. They survived by winning 2 - 0 against Portsmouth while their rivals lost or drew.

Arsenal and Manchester United both reach a record 17th FA Cup final (a repeat of the 1979 final). This is the third occasion that the two FA Cup finalists are the previous two FA Cup winners. Arsenal become the first club to win the FA Cup on penalties.

Liverpool reach a record 6th European Cup (Champions' League) final, winning the trophy for a record 5th time in their record 10th European final. They came back from 0 - 3 down to draw 3 - 3 and win the cup on penalties.
