History

The Top Division clubs resigned from the Football League which had run from 1889. They formed a separate body (called the Premier League) so that they could control more of the income coming into the game. This was the beginning of football being run by television companies and the bigger clubs. To add to the confusion, the second level was renamed as the First Division, the third level was renamed as the Second Division and the fourth level was renamed as the Third Division. This web site will refer to the four league levels as Top Division, second level, third level and fourth level.

On 16 August Liverpool lose 0 - 1 to Nottingham Forest in the first live league match broadcast on satelite television.

Manchester United won the first season. This was their first Championship since 1967. Crystal Palace equalled the record of being relegated with the highest number of points (49) for a 22 club Top Division. They went down on goal difference.

Arsenal became the first club to win both domestic cups beating Sheffield Wednesday in both the FA Cup and the League Cup.
