History

Aston Villa conceded a last minute equaliser at West Bromwich Albion. The 1 - 1 result meant that they were relegated. Portsmouth were relegated with them after spending 25 consecutive seasons in the Top Division.

The two third levels (Third Divisions North and South) were re-organised into a third and fourth level (called the Third and Fourth Divisions).

Birmingham City and Chelsea were invited to play in the Fairs Cup.
