History

The Top Division was expanded to 18 clubs. Automatic relegation and promotion between the Top and second levels was introduced.

Two clubs would be relegated each season from the Top Division to be replaced by two clubs promoted from the second level. This system would remain unchanged until 1974.

For the first time, the two clubs that could win the Championship played each other on the final day of the season. Aston Villa needed a draw against Liverpool. They won 5 - 0 to claim a record fourth Championship.

Newcastle United make their first appearance in the top division.
