A sweet, syrupy cake from South Africa.


Cooking Time

Approx 1 hour 30 minutes.


  1. Beat egg, sugar, and jam (or honey) together on high for approx. 15 minutes.
  2. Sift flour, bicarbinate of soda and salt in a bowl.
  3. Melt butter and add vinegar.
  4. Add milk to egg mixture alternately with the flour.
  5. Add vinegar and butter. Mix well.
  6. Pour into a dish approximately 20cm in diameter (preferably Pyrex), cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 175OC (350OF).
  7. The Malva is cooked when it is a consistant rich brown in colour. If it is still pale in the centre on top, it will require a little longer.
  8. Melt together the ingredients for the sauce and pour over the Malva as it comes out of the oven.
  9. Serve hot.
