Mother's Paternal Uncles / Aunts

Introduction

This page deals with my mother's paternal aunts and uncles and their children: my mother's first cousins. Their children are my second cousins. In Cypriot tradition first, second or third cousins are not allowed to marry.

It is the Cypriot custom for children to take a surname based on the first name of their father. The children of Ioannis and Maria took the name Ioannou. The children of Maritsa and Christos took the surname Christou. Many of the children of Panayiota and Christos combined the above approaches by taking the combined surname Christofi Midas (or Mitas).

Stratis Ioannou made a pilgrimage to the River Jordan and became a Hadji, which preceeds his surname.

Children born in England or the USA usually take the father's surname.

Members of this family are living in England, Cyprus and the USA.
