Cheb Khaled is one of the most famous singers of the Rai style. This originated in north west Algeria (the city of Oran) but is now popular throughout north Africa.
The music is based on a hypnotic melody which is repeated and interpreted by one or more singers. In this sample the two exquisite voices are slightly out of time with each other which gives it a spontaneous quality.
